Frequently Asked Questions

These aren’t your typical run-of-the-mill questions—these are the things folks who know Norfork want to know, and a few things newcomers should be prepared for!

The Water & The Lake
Is Norfork Lake water really as clear as everyone says?

Yes, absolutely! Norfork is one of the clearest lakes in the country, thanks to the ancient geology of the Ozark mountains and the protection provided by the surrounding national forest lands. It’s often compared to the Caribbean in terms of visibility, making it a dream for scuba divers and just plain wonderful for a refreshing swim. You can regularly see 20 to 30 feet down in the deeper sections!

Because much of the shoreline is Corps of Engineers property, the beaches are mostly undeveloped, natural sand coves. The best and most popular spots are accessible only by boat, but there are several designated public swim areas and sandy beaches at places like the Hand Cove and Jordan Recreation areas. Just ask your local marina or resort for the best spot closest to you!

The water is wonderfully refreshing! By mid-June, the surface temperatures usually climb into the low 80s Fahrenheit, making for perfect swimming, skiing, and tubing conditions right through September. Even in the depths of July and August, the clear water keeps the swimming holes cool and crisp.

Fishing & Licenses
Do I need a special license to fish Norfork Lake since it’s on the Arkansas/Missouri border?

You will need an Arkansas Fishing License if you are 16 or older. However, to fish the entirety of Norfork Lake without worrying about state lines, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers the White River Border Lakes License. This special, affordable permit allows you to fish the impounded waters of Norfork, Bull Shoals, and Table Rock lakes, which is a big help for serious anglers who follow the fish!

While the fishing is excellent year-round, many local guides will tell you that the late fall and winter months (November through March) offer the best chance at a truly massive striped bass. During these cooler months, the stripers feed heavily on shad in the deeper, open water, and are often concentrated in large schools. If you don’t mind a little chill, the reward can be huge!

Staying Local
Are the resorts and marinas mostly family-owned or are there big chains?

The vast majority of accommodations, from our cozy lakeside cabins to our full-service marinas, are proudly family-owned and operated. This is where our genuine Southern hospitality shines brightest. When you book here, you’re not just renting a room; you’re supporting a local family who takes pride in making sure you have a perfect vacation.

Whatever you need to get on the water, we’ve got it! You can find everything from roomy pontoon boats for family cruising and swimming to fast ski boats for wakeboarding and tubing, and specialized fishing boats designed for serious anglers. Houseboats are also a fantastic option for a week of living right on the lake!

Beyond The Lake
I love hiking. What’s unique about the trails around Norfork?

Our trails offer a special experience because they primarily wind through the protected Army Corps of Engineers and Ozark National Forest lands. This means very little development and stunning views. Look for the bluffs, the thick pine and hardwood forests, and the occasional sighting of local wildlife, like deer and turkey. Many trails lead right down to the shoreline for beautiful, hidden lake views.
