Hiking & Biking Trails

Discovering the Ozarks by Foot and Wheel

The emerald waters of Norfork Lake are framed by the lush, rugged landscape of the Ozark Mountains, offering some truly exceptional trails for both hikers and mountain bikers. Here, adventure awaits just steps from the shoreline, whether you seek a casual nature walk or an exhilarating singletrack ride.

Top Trails to Explore

The Norfork Lake area is home to a superb network of trails, mostly running along the scenic Corps of Engineers public land, guaranteeing spectacular views and access to the unspoiled wilderness.

🚴 For the Cyclists (and Hikers!)

  • Pigeon Creek National Recreation Trail System: Located just north of Mountain Home, this system is a premier destination for mountain bikers. It features up to 20 miles of stacked loop trails, catering to a wide range of skill levels. Winding through deep ravines and pine glades, the trails offer stunning lake views and glimpses of old homestead ruins.

  • David’s Trail: Designed to be a multi-purpose network for all ages and abilities, David’s Trail is a developing system that currently offers completed segments, including the popular Panther Bay Loop. This trail meanders right along the Corps shoreline, providing constant views and connecting Robinson Point all the way to the 101 Bridge area.

🚶 For the Dedicated Hikers

  • Robinson Point National Recreation Trail: A beautiful and accessible trail found at Robinson Point Park. This moderate 3-mile loop (or semi-loop) is perfect for a few hours of exploration, taking you through cedar groves and offering breathtaking overlooks of the turquoise lake water from atop scenic bluffs.

  • The Norfork Trail: This path is designed specifically for foot traffic only and covers about 13 miles in total. Trailheads can be found at Upper Quarry Park, George’s Cove, and Tracy Recreation Area. Considered a moderately difficult trek, it leads hikers along dramatic shorelines and steep bluffs, showcasing classic Ozark Plateau scenery.

  • Short Nature Trails: For a quick connection with nature, check out the easy, short loops at several Corps of Engineers parks, including the Bidwell Point Trail and the Big Tree Trail at Gamaliel Park.

Essential Tips for the Trail

  • Public Access: Since the entire shoreline property is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, you are free to explore and beach your boat anywhere along the shore without worrying about trespassing on private land.

  • Bluff Caution: On trails like the Robinson Point Trail and the Norfork Trail, be mindful when near steep bluffs, as they often lack safety railings. The spectacular views are worth the caution!

  • Seasonal Beauty: Visit in the spring to see the dogwood trees bloom and wildflowers emerge, or plan a fall hike to witness the Ozark hills ablaze with vibrant red and gold foliage.

Whether you’re looking for an easy stroll to a lake overlook or a challenging ride through the woods, the Norfork Lake trail system is ready to welcome your next outdoor adventure!
